Crake Catch and Release restriction
Starting with the 2003 season the Crake and the Leven have had a mandatory catch and release restriction applied, in conjunction with a Net Limitation order on the estuary.

The Crake River Association believes that the run of salmon on the Crake has been more or less stable for 25+ years. There is no evidence of any downward trend. Prior to catch and release the annual reported rod catch on the Crake was about 30 fish per annum, and the release rate was rising towards 50%. In common with the fisheries interests on the Leven we believe that while there is need for caution, a 100% C&R is an unjustified measure. A 3 review was held in September 2006 and the EA declared that both rivers were still failing to meet their spawning targets, and hence the catch and release will remain.

The Crake River Association, and Leven Anglers will continue to contest the restriction. We believe that anglers and fisheries owners are best placed to apply relevant restrictions on their members. For example LAA had already imposed a 1 male fish restriction per member.

The model used to justify the restriction is deeply flawed, and has some gross errors in it.

Here is an analysis of the original model. This was written in 2004.
