South Cumbria Kingfishers

Company History

In 1976 a group of fishing enthusiasts pooled resources to purchase a length of single bank rights on the River Duddon. Just above where it crosses the border of what was Cumberland and the old district of Furness in Lancashire on one of the most exquisite and celebrated Sea Trout and Salmon rivers in the entire northern Counties.

The aim of the original one hundred shareholders was to provide and preserve quality fishing in the area. When the Company was founded Penny Parrock shares had a nominal value of £130.00. Since that time steady increase has taken them to beyond ten times that value.

The River Duddon

By 1978 they had negotiated the purchase of the other bank and consolidated their fishing between Duddon Bridge and the Strompers on the Boundary of Duddon Hall Estate. An additional single bank length at Hall Dunnerdale was aquired by the Company in 1981, and in 1985 a lease agreement was made adding the Sella Fishery. Today most of the best fishing on the Duddon is under the care of the Company.

The River Crake

In 1979 the Company added fishing on the Crake and Allan Tarn to their portfolio. The Allan Tarn fishery on the Crake has proved one of the best Salmon holes in South Cumbria. It was in this beautiful location that part of the ‘Andy’ Nicholson video “The Occasional Salmon” was made.

The River Kent

In 1996 the Bowston Fishery above Burneside was added to widen the portfolio to a third catchment. This Kent single bank beat has the added bonus of Brown Trout. The mill dams and food supply available along the Kent enhances the holding capacity for the Brown Trout, some of which grow in excess of two pounds. The added spring fishing gives shareholders an extended season on the river. In 2006 reciprocal rights were agreed on a renewable annual basis with Burneyside Angling Club.

The Company Policy and it’s Future

Penny Parrock exists in order to provide fishing for it's shareholders.

The Company continues to maintain the existing fisheries and we will consider adding to our portfolio if new opportunities arrise.
