EDITING:

The number one must have before making any good quality film is getting an up to date editing program.

BASIC:

- Ulead video studio

Ulead video studio 10 was the first program I got - we used it for editing our first batch of you tube vid’s, the special effects are from ‘Detonationfilms.com’ (See Below). You can get more up to date versions of this program

ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO 10

- Pinnacle studio

I did not use pinnacle studio for long but it made some batter quality results than Ulead, I personally found Ulead much easier - I used version 12 ultimate, I can imagine that there are much better versions now! The chroma key tool was slightly better though!

ADVANCED:

- SONY VEGAS PRO 9/10

This is a fantastic professional, easy to use editing program that can produce some amazing videos! Editing is very easy and you have lots of freedom and unlimited tracks to edit on! If you have ‘action essentials 2’ or stock footage from ‘Detonation Films.com’ (See Below) then it will work perfectly! Ensure though you have QuickTime running on your PC for action essentials (Mac users are ok)

-ADOBE PREMIERE CS5

I got this program along with Adobe After effects (See below) because they work so well together. This is a bit harder to work with than Vegas but I found that I could not really use after effects to put special effects on edited movies from Vegas...

Once I have edited a video on premiere I then simply copy and paste to after effects and apply FX from there. The program produces some great results, it can be a bit fussy on file format depending on what camera you have - AVC-HD and MPEG are good formats, I would check the specs first! Works on MAC or PC (64 bit only for CS5!)

Overall editing is much easier on Vegas than premiere in my opinion, it is also much faster!

If you’ve got a demo of after effects but you have Vegas, you can still edit your footage on Vegas, render it out and import into after effects!

PREMIERE & AFTER EFFECTS

If your serious about your film making, you will eventually invest in this incredible program! This is the best visual effects program out there on the consumer market, you can do anything you want... Provided you know how to use it! I have used this on some of my more recent videos including ‘Indiana Jones part 6’ and ‘Rendezvous’ so you can see what it can produce. There are some tutorials coming soon to our channel network on this program so keep an eye out! You can use a 30 day trail version if you want to get started, I used this on the Indiana Jones film! - All of the Advanced software is quite expensive so do try other methods like student discounts or the naughty way...

Composting & Visual Effects

TIP:

Insure that your sound quality is very good before trying to create HD videos and special effects because this will let your video quality down severely. It is better to have bad quality video than bad quality sound... Trust me!

Action Essentials 2 is a must have for making great action movies! It includes muzzle flashes, fire, glass, explosions, water, dirt charges, smoke, dust, 3D shells, bullet hits and more... It also includes some sound effects if your struggling to get some - works with Sony Vegas/premiere/after effects! This however is very advanced and the basic software is likely not to handle this so check out detonation films.com for free stock footage!

MAC VS PC

Video editors prefer apple mac computers, but your not likely to be spending £4,000 for one of these. The adobe software (CS5) will run just as well on the PC but if you get Final cut pro (Apple) then you would be better off getting a mac because Apple design all there OWN software to run fast on their machines!

Unfortunately, programs like Adobe CS5 will not run well on your average PC, unless you have an up to date processor and plenty of RAM! The best PC for advanced editing would be the Alienware aurora. It is a gaming computer with a tone of power,

But you can get away with an XPS 8300

(Visit DELL online). Always go for dell, they last the longest!
